Ports at Play

One of the ports along Ontario's Lake Erie coast is Port Stanley. In a warmer than usual spring the beach at Port Stanley is already being used by hundreds of people. Normally, the lake would be far to cold to swim in this time of year.

Like many other places in the world, the post 1994 economic pulse has flushed the town with sufficient capital to "gentrify" some of the streetscape - allowing the restoration of some commercial properties including a bed-and-breakfast.
Although busy in the summer - the season is short, from Victoria Day (May 24) to Labour Day (September 4). After that the tourist trade is very thin but there are still visitors who come for a lunch of fresh pickerel, or to watch the Monarch butterflies begin their migration across the lake to points south.
Another recent tourism trend is the Tour of the Ports - wherein motorcycle groups spend a day travelling from Port to Port enjoying the more-or-less empty roads and small cafe's.

The Port is rich in History.

In the early part of the last century the famous "Stork Club" Dance hall provided a venue for the big bands. The Stork Club did not survive into the modern age but "Mackies" did - a famous hamburger joint on the beach serve many hundreds of people per day in the summer.
